2. Fundamental Research for Animal Health and Welfare
We would like to gain more knowledge on the relation between cow and calf health. At our experimental farm we can collect data on cows and calf (including colostrum quality and uptake) and we have a lot of sensors in place. We are looking for partners who can study the colostrum more in detail (what are the key components that are relevant for the transfer of immunity) and we are looking for partners who can help us with the relation of the genetics in colostrum quantity and quality, and the heritability traits of colostrum traits to the off spring.
Our main question is: what can a farm manager do to improve colostrum production and quality?
Research at Aeres University of Applied Sciences: Our professors, teacher researchers and students carry out practice-oriented research together with partners in education, industry and government agencies. In this way, we want to play our part in innovations in the field, and develop our own educational and professional practice. This is our contribution to the development of scientific knowledge and insights.
Healthy animals are the basis of every sustainable cattle farm, and therefore, it is not without reason that animal health and animal welfare form an important element of the cattle sector. With the Cattle Health Management professorship, Aeres Hogeschool Dronten respond to developments in the Dutch cattle farming sector. The professorship not only focuses on animal health but on the relationship between animal welfare and societal acceptance as well. Which preventive measures can cattle farmers take to keep their livestock free from disease? How do we ensure that healthy cows stay healthy?
