intestinal organoids, enteric pathogens, rotavirus, pigs, pathogenesis study
2. Fundamental Research for Animal Health and Welfare
We are interested in collaborating on research projects that focus on the pathogenesis of enteric viruses. Currently, we have developed and characterized intestinal organoids from jeunum of pigs in order to study rotaviruses. We are opened to different ideas that include the use of this in vitro model to improve the acknowledge on the biology of rotavirus or other enteric viruses.
The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Lombardia e dell'Emilia Romagna (IZSLER) is a public veterinary Institute that belongs to the Italian National Health Service. The mission of the Institute is the protection of the public health supporting the animal health and the production activities in the agrifood. In details, it provides diagnostic services for animal diseases and zoonoses, carries out food safety control, disposes epidemiology surveillance, conducts research project in the field of animal health, welfare and food safety with a “One Health” approach.
It is part of a national network comprising nine other Italian public veterinary Institutes, covering the whole Italian territory.
IZSLER cooperates with national reference centres and international Institutions (OIE, EFSA, FAO).
Our reference laboratory of Tecnologie Biologiche Applicate focuses on:
- Development of alternative in vitro models (i.e intestinal organoids)
- Biobanking of a wide range of cell lines and animal pathogens
- Development of molecular assays for the detection of relevant infection agents in animal field
- Investigation of viral and bacterial pathogens by whole genome sequencing
