1. Novel Technologies for Prevention, Detection, Assessment and Management of Animal Health and Welfare
I have over 20 years experience as an animal welfare scientist, researching and advising on animal welfare matters across government and industry. I now lead my own business, Animal Welfare Solutions Ltd (AWS), collaborating with other scientists and industry experts.
We are currently working on a project investigating the design aspects of livestock crates used for road transport and the impacts on animal welfare. The project has wider implications for driver safety and animal welfare training, and improving processes across the supply chain, including monitoring systems for livestock transport.
Another research project investigating practical pain relief options for farmers. This project also includes qualitative research to gain farmer opinions and insights into using pain relief.
I also have experience developing automated systems for early detection of disease in cattle.
AWS specialise in finding practical solutions for a wide range of animal management systems using a One Welfare approach.
I have worked with a wide range of stakeholders, advising on the strategic direction and priorities for animal welfare across a range of industries including, dairy cows, pigs, poultry, sheep, beef and deer.
Much of my research has been in collaboration with international research institutions and universities over the years.
