We are a multidisciplinary team of animal scientists, and entomologists with expertise in applied research and a primary focus on insects, fungi, and circular agriculture. We work closely with industry partners to translate scientific insights into practical, scalable solutions that improve sustainability across the agri-food sector.
Our research focuses on the use of insects as sustainable biological tools to reduce global organic waste streams by converting low-value side streams into high-value biomass. In parallel, we investigate the application of insects as alternative protein sources for feed and, potentially, food, thereby contributing to circular agriculture and more resilient food systems.
In addition to insect production systems, our entomology research includes the development and application of entomopathogenic fungi as safe and environmentally friendly biological control agents in agricultural systems. These nature-based pest management strategies support sustainable crop production, reduce reliance on chemical pesticides, and contribute to climate-smart and resilient farming systems.
Aeres provides several climate-regulated units for insect production, which also serve as controlled experimental environments for research on insect rearing and organic waste reduction. We have demonstrated experience in projects on insect welfare and food waste valorization using insects, supported by fully equipped laboratory facilities.
We are actively seeking to expand our international research network and welcome collaboration with partners interested in joint research, innovative projects, and applied field validation.
Aeres University of Applied Sciences is a leading Dutch institution focused on applied education and practice-oriented research in the domains of agriculture, food, environment, and animal sciences. The university closely collaborates with industry partners, government, and research organizations to address real-world challenges and support innovation in the agri-food sector. With a strong emphasis on sustainability, animal welfare, and practical implementation, Aeres combines scientific knowledge with hands-on experience. Students and researchers work directly with farms and businesses, ensuring that education and research remain closely connected to professional practice and societal needs, both nationally and internationally.
